    Security Awareness Training Deadline 18 January, 2005
    January 13, 2005 - NAFI reminds its members and all flight instructors that TSA / Dept of Homeland Security has mandated that all flight school employees complete security awareness training no later than January 18.

    The definition, from the Federal Register announcement of the mandate, reads as follows.  [emphasis added by NAFI]

    Flight school employee
    means:
    a flight instructor or ground instructor certificated under 14 CFR Parts 61, 141, or 142;
    a chief instructor certificated under 14 CFR Part 141;
    a director of flight training certificated under 14 CFR Part 142; or
    any other person employed by a flight school, including an independent contractor, who has direct contact with a flight school student.  This includes an independent or solo flight instructor certificated under 14 CFR Part 61.

    While the rule technically requires the training even of independent instructors who are certificated but not active, NAFI suggests that a reasonable alternative may be sustainable. Current employees of flight schools must complete training by 18 January, and those hired after 18 January must complete the training within 60 days of hiring. If a currently inactive flight instructor undergoes the training promptly upon becoming active after 18 January, TSA may approve the delay in training. NAFI emphasizes that this is an area that has not been addressed specifically by TSA, and NAFI encourages all instructors to complete the training prior to January 18.

    The training is available online at
    https://download.tsa.dhs.gov/fssa/training/ and can be completed in about an hour. (Please note that numerous members have experienced difficulty in printing out the completion certificate after finishing the training.)
