Fried Selected For CFI Hall Of Fame

August 16, 2005 - Howard Fried, aviation columnist and author, has been selected for induction to the Flight Instructor Hall of Fame.

Fried, a resident of Albuquerque, is perhaps best known for his monthly column Eye of the Examiner, published in FLYING for nearly a decade. He has been a lifelong crusader for aviation safety and pilot proficiency. Starting as an aviation cadet during the Second World War, he established Drake Aviation in Michigan after his discharge. Drake was headquartered at Oakland Pontiac Airport, with three satellite operations at suburban airports in the Motor City area. Over the course of five decades, he gave thousands of hours of instruction, administered over 4000 checkrides as a designated examiner, and published eight books on aviation.

Mr Fried is rated as an Airline Transport Pilot, licensed to fly seaplanes and gliders as well as single and multiengine land aircraft. His flight instructor ratings include single and multiengine airplanes, gliders, and instrument airplanes. He also holds both advanced and instrument ground instructor ratings.

The induction ceremony will take place in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in the fall.
