NAFI - Who We Are

Founded in 1967, NAFI is dedicated exclusively to "raising and maintaining the professional standing of the flight instructor in the aviation community." Through the years, NAFI has kept that pledge. Now, more than ever before, we are moving to enhance this original commitment.

NAFI is not only the national association that serves the full spectrum of the flight instructor community, but also maintains the finest benefits package available for everyone from the independent instructor to those teaching at flight schools. NAFI recognizes that flight instructors are truly the "teachers of flight" as well as the front line for "quality control" in our aviation world.

The association’s efforts focus on the needs of its members. While members benefit in different ways from NAFI membership, the most important reason for being a part of NAFI is supporting the flight instructor’s responsibility to all of aviation and commitment to professionalism.

Regardless of your specific area of expertise or interest in flight instruction, this is the best time for you to be a NAFI member. In NAFI, your role as a flight instructor is what we represent and support. New NAFI programs have been developed that benefit the flight instructor community and bring more value to your membership. JOIN TODAY and become more involved in NAFI’s efforts that will directly benefit you - the flight instructor. If you do not feel comfortable joining online, or would rather pay by check, please download this member join/renew application and mail it to us for processing.

NAFI Mission Statement

The purpose of the National Association of Flight Instructors is to establish and promote a high level of professionalism among aviation educators and to provide recognition for their contributions to aviation safety, education and training.

Purpose of NAFI

The purposes of NAFI as set forth in the original 1967 constitution are:

1. To recognize flight instruction as a profession and to help the instructor understand, achieve, and maintain the recognized standards of his profession.

2. To serve as a central point for the dissemination of knowledge, methodology, and new information relative to flight training.

3. To consult and cooperate with local, state, and federal governments for improving legislation concerning pilot training, certification and aviation regulations.

4. To work with all segments of the aviation industry for the improvement of flight education, efficiency and safety.

5. To encourage the interchange of ideas among instructors through the informal fellowship and formal education opportunities provided by local chapters.

Your job is flight instruction ... NAFI’s job is to make it easier.

We, the members of the National Association of Flight Instructors, accept the responsibility to practice our profession according to the highest ethical standards.

Therefore we pledge:

  • To always provide a safe and effective learning situation for our students;
  • To continually improve our own teaching and flying skills through education and operational experiences;
  • To scrupulously adhere to safe practice and to applicable Federal and State Aviation Regulations;
  • To treat all fellow flight instructors with respect;
  • To conduct both our professional and personal lives in a manner to reflect credit on the profession and to set an example of self-discipline for all pilots;
  • And, to encourage our fellow flight instructors and the organizations in which they teach to uphold and support these principles, and to question and resist those practices which may undermine or defeat them.

Each member of the National Association of Flight Instructors agrees to abide by this Code of Ethics to further the objectives declared in the NAFI Constitution (Preamble and Section B) and the Bylaws (Article 2) of the Association.
