11:30AM - 12:45PM Enhancing Weather Knowledge and Training. Presented by Gary Pokodner, FAA Program Manager Adverse weather continues to provide challenges for safe and efficient aviation operations.  These challenges are attributable to numerous factors including regions with little or no radar coverage such as the Gulf, Alaska, and Caribbean, difficulties for pilots to estimate visibility, and limitations of flight planning tools to enable three-dimensional planning to avoid adverse conditions.  Other factors include weather information latency, utility of VFR Not Recommended (VNR) statements, lack of ceiling and visibility information in remote areas, and pilot weather training that does not provide experience in adverse weather conditions.  This session is intended for flight instructors to highlight weather knowledge areas  identified as lacking by pilots, to enhance instructor ability to teach aviation weather, and to provide information on new weather products including their limitations and enhanced benefits. In this role, Gary has been working to identify new research efforts related to bringing weather information into the cockpit to address near term needs and to enable various mid and far term NextGen concepts.

1:00PM - 2:15PM The Kings On Straight Talk About Aviation Safety Presented by John and Martha King, King Schools When we say “safety is our highest priority” do we really mean what we say? • Pilots throughout the world know John and Martha King from their fun video presentations in their courses, and regard them as their personal aviation mentors. The Kings’ use of technology and clear, simple, and fun teaching have made aviation knowledge more accessible to hundreds of thousands of pilots and maintenance technicians.  The Kings’ ongoing love of flying and learning has resulted in their being the first couple to both hold every category and class of FAA rating on their pilot and instructor certificates. Martha is the first and only woman to achieve this complete ratings sweep.   Through the years, the Kings have retained their enthusiasm for flying.  They fly their own Dassault Falcon 10 jet wherever they go, swapping captain and copilot duties on each leg.  John and Martha have had many awards and honors, but they say their greatest honor has been the privilege to play an important role in the lives of so many pilots.
