March 21st, 2018 8:00 PM “Telling is NOT Teaching Chapter 2 - The Learning Process

Following on the January MentorLIVE presentation of Telling is Not Teaching, in Chapter 2 Thompson examines the learning cycle as a simple model to help lend clarity to the seemingly chaotic learning process. Viewed from the outside, chaos appears to arise because learners approaches learning in different ways.

"However, we find that it is not chaotic, but a fluid process based on how learning truly occurs," Thompson said. "True deep learning occurs through taking time to grapple openly with new content. The four part learning cycle serves to guide learners through new content, while allowing the learner to absorb it in their own way."

Mike Thompson has been a CFII since 1979. He served eight years with the U.S.Coast Guard and conducted flight instruction part-time. After active duty, he earned a master's degree in education while teaching airframe and power-plant mechanics. He then spent eight years as an instructional-design consultant on projects in the United States, and internationally. He retired in 2013, after working in college administration as a dean, and continues to flight-instruct in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
