“Teaching is Not Telling”
“Teaching is Not Telling” presented by Mike Thompson, CFII MEI and Retired College Dean, hosted by NAFI Chairman Bob Meder

Join veteran flight instructor and educator Mike Thompson as he applies the principles of educational psychology from the FAA-H-8083-9A Aviation Instructor’s Handbook to the art and science of teaching. Using simple, down-to-earth language, Thompson examines how to enable genuine teaching by developing the student-instructor relationship. Not just for flight instructors, Thompson’s advice will help any educator make the shift from telling to encouraging deep learning. This presentation is from chapter one of his popular book Teaching is Not Telling.

Mike Thompson is a CFII since 1979. He served eight years with the US Coast Guard and conducted flight instruction part-time. After active duty, Thompson earned a master’s degree in education while teaching airframe and power-plant mechanics. He then went on to spend eight years as an instructional-design consultant on projects in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Kuwait. In 2013, after working in college administration as a dean, he retired and continues to teach and fly as a flight instructor out of New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
